This 'n That: General notices about what is happening on the WHOBA scene.

Stuff that is still interesting or current, but which has got a little too old for the NEWS section will be placed here. If you have any announcements that would be of interest to OWs, I will be happy to place them here.

A long letter and professional spiel from Michael J Howard (Mike Pratt -- Orwell/Hansons, 58-64)

For all of you interested in WH cricket, Chris Redpath (Orwell 64-71) writes...

Thought one or two people would like to know that I have the 1971 Woolverstone First X1 cricket score book. Pete Sadler gave it to me as I was the cricket captain at the time and we were unbeaten for that year. The first it had ever happened.

That cricket team of ours in 1971 really was good wasn't it? - as of course was the rugby team. I think that several of us got colours in both sports - John Dawlings, Steven James, Dave Waight, Steven Joly and myself at least. Must set some sort of a record especially as three of us were in the one house!

I wonder what happened to Steven Joly. I don't think I've ever met a guy with more energy. I remember he used to go for a cross country run after we finished playing rugby on Wednesdays! All I wanted to do was have a shower and relax.

John Dawlings (Orwell 64-71) adds....

In addition to the 5 of us who got colours for both cricket and rugby, I can think of at least two more who got them for rugby, Pete Carlile (now Alexander) and Dennis Blease. Mind you any cricket or rugby team that had Dave Waight in it couldn't go far wrong. He was in the year below me (1965-72) and I believe in his last year became the first person to captain either the rugby or cricket team (and of course he captained both) without being made a school prefect. This was because when he wasn't killing everybody at sport, he was smoking and drinking and getting caught regularly.

He was a mad keen soccer player much to Glyn Evans' disgust and once when he was suspended got himself a trial with Tottenham Hotspurs! The only time I can remember him scoring a duck was when Spurs were playing on the telly. He rushed back to the pavilion, threw off his pads and sprinted off to the TV for the rest of the afternoon!

John Dawlings (Orwell 64-71) writes recently...

Feeling rather pleased with myself having won the Australian Veterans (45 - 49 years) 5,000 and 10,000 metres athletic championships in Canberra over Easter. The 10,000 was quite fast in 34.30 but the 5,000 was only two days later with a much slower time of 16.40.

At the New South Wales Veterans I ran 1,500 in 4.26. Thinking back I believe that the school A* standard was 5.00 minutes for the mile and that this probably became about 4.40 for the 1,500. Its nice to think that I'm considerably fitter as a 45 year old then I ever was as an 18 year old!

All the best,

John Dawlings.

Woolvo Tape!!

A BBC Radio 4 documentary about Woolverstone Hall was re-broadcast on November 29th (I think) last year, and a cassette tape of the broadcast has been kindly sent to me by Claudia Cragg (now living in the United States). Eric Coates also has a cassette of the original broadcast in December 1996. The programme was entitled "A Chance in a Lifetime - A Portrait of Woolverstone Hall -" and is well worth a listen -- if only to hear a few voices you thought you'd never hear again! If you would like a copy of the tape, I am sure it can be arranged -- just please bear in mind that there are costs involved in copying (legal fees??!!) and postage. For the time being I would like to suggest that anyone in the UK or Europe send e-mail to Eric, and anyone elsewhere in the world send e-mail to me (Tony Boys) if you would like to request a copy.

The transcript of the tape is now available on this site.

OW Database

There is in existence a WHOBA XL file directory of OWs. However, as I am sure you will appreciate, this cannot be made available on demand as some OWs naturally wish to maintain their privacy. Every effort will be made, however, to help OWs and former Woolverstone Hall staff maintain or renew personal contacts with each other. If you would like to send me (Tony Boys) e-mail (details below) I will be happy to supply SPECIFIC contact details from the list (in most cases) to OWs, former staff, and others with strong connections with Woolverstone Hall.

There is also a list of OW e-mail addresses for about 70 OWs who are online. This list is available on demand -- please send me e-mail if you would like to see it.

<<Sabor do Brasil>>

Andy Hunton's restaurant is called "Sabor do Brasil" (=taste of Brazil) and is at thirty something Highgate Hill. He's always pleased to see OWs.

Why not give him a ring on 0171 263 9066??

Brazilian food is mostly beans and veg, so very good for vegies.
