WOOLVERSTONE HALL OLD BOYS' ASSOCIATION ROSE BOWL
I suspect that the majority of our members are not aware of the existence of the WHOBA Rose Bowl. It was recently presented for the sixth time so I thought it appropriate to remedy the situation.
Following the demise of Woolverstone Hall School and the purchase of the site by Ipswich High School it seemed likely the opportunities to visit the place which held many memories would be gone forever. We were surprised and delighted that the staff were not only friendly but had a genuine interest in our school with which they now felt a close link. There was possibly an historical element to this, as I understand that there had been close links between the schools - sadly after I had left!
We were allowed visits to Woolverstone and held a large function there. In addition the Headmistress gave us some space in the west wing to house our memorabilia collection. The excellent relationship between WHOBA and Ipswich HS has continued with the only problem being Old Boys visiting without prior notification and wandering around the grounds. Fortunately, this is now a rare occurrence.
As a gesture of friendship and to retain the memory of Woolverstone Hall School it was decided to make some from of presentation to the Ipswich HS. A suitable presentation piece to be awarded annually to the girl who had made the greatest contribution in extra mural activities was the decision reached between the Headmistress, Roger Friend and myself. I purchased the Rose Bowl on behalf of the Association and had it engraved.
Every year since then we have received an invitation for two people to attend Prize Day and Roger Friend and I went for the first few years. In 2002 Roger could not make it so Peter Brown came with me. In 2003 Derek Thornbery and his wife represented the Association. This year's recipient was Kelly Moxham and a letter from her is attached.
This year (2004) I will take a photograph of the Rose Bowl and have it put on one or more of the websites.
