Dear Tony

I'm very sorry to have to tell you more sad news. Annette Clarke passed away at the beginning of July. I'm sure many old boys will remember her very well as she was matron of, firstly, Corners and then Orwell for many years. She moved to Chelmondiston after she retired and remained there until her death.

Peter Sadler

Thanks very much, Peter, for letting WHOBA know. I'm sure many will be saddened to hear that Annette has passed away. I will be happy to post here any memories OWs would like to send in. Thank you.

This may have been posted already (so apologies) but I heard that a few months ago, Chim Anaba (Hansons late seventies to early eighties) had died.

Chim did not spend many years at Woolverstone - as I recall, he joined in the fifth year? (I may be wrong) but he made an impact by virtue of his character. All I know of him after leaving was when I met him at an exhibition at Olympia where he had a stand - he was a textile designer as I recall. I thought there would be some who would want to know this if they did not already.

Cheers

Mike Volpe (Halls 76-81)

Dear Tony

I thought that someone ought to let you know that Linda Watkins died last week of cancer.

She was the wife of Tony Watkins (Biology Teacher) who was the Assistant Housemaster in Berners from 1974 - 1979.

Regards

Helju Cross (nee Sadler)

Our deepest condolences go out to Tony Watkins and all their family.

If any OWs who remember Tony and Linda Watkins would like to send in any memories they have, I will be happy to post them here. Thank you. (Tony)

This sad news about Eden Swithinbank was sent to me by Bill Salisbury recently:

I have been asked to pass on the sad news that Eden Swithinbank died from a heart attack on 26 March. He was 44.

Those that attended last December's soiree will remember him well. I wasn't there that night and really know nothing about him, other than that he was in Johnston's House 1966-73. If there is anyone who knew him well enough to prepare a small obit, perhaps they could forward it to Roger, Peter or Tony for publication.

I have his widow's details if anyone would like to contact her.

Regards

Bill Salisbury

Sorry about the delay in posting this announcement. I have been hoping that someone would send in an obituary for Eden. I will be happy to post more here if any of Eden's friends would like to send a few words to WHOBA. Thank you.

See a photo of Eden at the December 1999 soiree

Dear Tony,

I have just recently accessed the WHOBA site. I was very sorry to read of the death at a young age of Eden Swithinbank. He was the year below me and in another house, but when we were both in the sixth form we had some fun together. On one memorable occasion we took a number of boys from the first year carol singing in Chelmondiston in aid of the RNLI...this on a dark winter's night, tramping over the fields and back again.

I saw Eden a few times after we left , as we discovered we both lived in S.E.London. He hosted a party - virtually all old boys- at his family's house in Eltham in (I think) 1973, and I have fond memories of chanting along to 'Bohemian Rhapsody ' when he took me out on my 21st birthday. We lost touch when I moved away from London .

Yours
Bobbie Rolfe

An interesting article about Tony Silver!

Sad news again, I'm afraid. Some of you may have seen the obituary for David Cleary (Corners 57-64?) in the newspapers. If you did not, here is one for you to read. We have no idea about David's family background, but I am sure all OWs will want to join me in sending our deepest condolences to all his family and friends.

From Bob Massie (Hunt)....
REVVING UP FOR A REUNION:
CALLING THE CLASS OF 72-79...

Steve [Davis] Tauroza (Hansons 65-70) will be visiting the UK from Hong Kong (where he is resident) from March 25th for a week or two. He will be at the IATEFL in Edinburgh and then in London by April 1st for the monthly soiree at the Victoria. Steve is very interested in meeting with as many people (including masters) from his era at Woolverstone as possible as he probably will not be in the UK again for quite a few months (August/September).

Steve has been in touch with Bill Salisbury, Harvey Angel and Eric Coates, so if you are NOT going to be at the April 1st soiree but want to contact Steve, these OWs can probably help you to do so. I hope as many of you as possible will make contact with Steve while he is in the UK this time. Thanks.

(Tony)

I was very shocked to hear in a message from Peter Rooney about the sudden and violent death of Martin Offiah's father in Nigeria. It is possible that some OWs have not heard this news, and also possible (?) that some OWs know of Martin but did not know he was an OW. In any event, I would like to offer our most sincere condolences on behalf of all OWs for his sudden and tragic loss.

NEW NOVEL BYALAN FISK OUT SOON!!

Sorry, sad news again, I'm afraid. I received this message from Roger Friend on 12th January 1999:

I have had a letter this morning from Norman Cockayne, which contained some more bad news to add to that which has been very obvious on the website over the past couple of months.

He told me that his wife Joan died on new years eve. She had retained her cheerfulness throughout some years of gradually failing health and she died peacefully after a very short stay in hospital. Many OWs will remember her as the bursar's wife from 1966 to 79. She made many friends through house Christmas parties, drama and music productions, cookery classes, which she ran for the 6th form, and several other activities. The Holly, where Joan and Norman lived at that time, was a popular port of call for those that wished for a change of scene, particularly on Sunday mornings and sometimes quite late at night for a quick break before facing the housemaster's wrath for a late return from Ipswich. I have written to Norman on behalf of WHOBA to express our regrets. Meanwhile Norman has extended his best wishes to the Association.

Thanks, Roger, for your message.

I am sure all of us who knew Joan will be very sad to hear of her death. I remember very well Joan's great makeup skills, having been personally on the receiving end before several plays. It was always fun to be made up by Joan as she never failed to have a smile and a bit of chat for whoever she was making up (helped ease the pre-stage nervousness!). I think we will all remember Joan as a happy, warm, and friendly person who helped make WH, especially plays and events, the fun and special place that it was.

Please feel free to send all memories and messages of condolence to either Roger Friend or myself (Tony) for inclusion here. Thank you.

Sad news again, I'm afraid. I received this message from Harvey Angel on 7th January 1999:

Nick Collins (Berners 62-69) asked me to inform you that his brother Sean, who I believe was in Berners 67-74, died just before Christmas in New Zealand aged 42. He suffered a massive heart attack which caused his instant death.

There was a certain amount of controversy surrounding Sean's death, and the story made national headlines in New Zealand. A newspaper article can be seen at:

http://www.press.co.nz/52/98123129.htm

Please let me (Tony Boys) know if you have any trouble seeing this and I will send you a text version.

I was personally very sorry indeed to hear about Sean's death. I remember him well as Nick and I were in the same year in Berners and our younger brothers were also in the same year (and house) together. I also met Nick and Sean's family many times as we used to see a bit of each other in the holidays in London, and I also went out with the family sometimes when they visited WH. I believe Sean had lived in New Zealand for about 20 years, but I am not sure as I have had very little contact with either Nick or Sean since leaving WH. Neither do I have any means of direct contact with Sean's family in NZ, but it is possible that they will see this page, so if anyone has messages of condolence I will be happy to post them here.... Interesting reminiscences from Jon Gornall

Roger Friend has sent in text from the personal columns of the East Anglia Daily Times, of 10 December.

It said "CROMARTY Robert J.K. M.A. (Edin) M.A.(Oxon) - Peacefully at home on Saturday December 5, 1998, beloved husband of Esmee, dear father of Andrew and Jennifer, grandfather of Thomas and William and much loved brother of Betty. Funeral service at St Margaret's Church, Ipswich on Thursday, December 17, at 11.30a.m followed by private committal at Ipswich Crematorium. Family flowers only please but donations, if desired, payable to Ipswich Hospital N.H.S. Trust for the Department for the Care of the Elderly, may be sent to Farthing, Singleton & Hastings, 650, Woodbridge Road, Ipswich IP4 4PW."

Roger says:
Dick (Richard Woollett) told me that he had had a series of heart attacks in recent months. He had spent time in hospital, where he was visited by Dick and Charlotte, who reported that he was being as "valiant and humorous as ever." He was allowed home for his final few days where he passed away peacefully. I have asked Fred Moughton to send a donation on behalf of WHOBA. As some OWs may wish to send personal donations, I would be grateful if you could include the details of the EADT text, along with the information already on the website. I would also be grateful for memories of Bob that could be included in the next Janus. I have written to Esmee expressing our (WHOBAs) regret and have asked if she would like to include any personal memories. I have fond memories of Bob both as my Latin teacher in 1b and as assistant housemaster in Johnstons, while I was there.

Peter Silvey says:

Incidentally in one of the Times supplements this week giving the latest school league tables in the UK, there was a picture of Ipswich High school girls at work in the library.

That's interesting. Did anyone else see it? Was there any quotable script with it?
